Application

We are now accepting applications for the 2024-25 academic year.

Admission for Graduates with a German University Degree

The requirement for admission to the Master’s programme in History & Economics is a university degree with a final grade of 2.5 ("gut") or better in the Bachelor's programmes Economics, Europäische Geschichte, or Philosophy & Economics from the University of Bayreuth or a comparable degree. If you do not fulfill the requirement, you can still apply to study with us, but you may have to go through an additional interview process.

A Bachelor's degree in Economics or History from a university in the Federal Republic of Germany with a final grade of 2.5 or better is recognized as a comparable degree, but admission may be subject to conditions. Applicants whose degree is not in economics or history but closely related (e.g., political sciences, ethnology, or statistics major with a minor in economics) can also be admitted subject to conditions. Typical such conditions are that particular modules from the Bachelor's programme at the University of Bayreuth are successfully completed within one year. Whether the criteria for acceptance into the Master's programme are met or not will be reviewed by an Admission Committee on an individual basis prior to the enrolment process.

Admission for Graduates without a German University Degree
A Bachelor's degree in Economics or History from a foreign university will be recognized if we reckon that the implied chances of succeeding in the demanding Master programme are at least as high as those of a student with a Bachelor´s degree in Economics, History, or Philosophy & Economics from the University of Bayreuth with a final grade of "gut" (2.5 or better in the German grading system). This necessitates that the completed curriculum is sufficiently similar and the obtained grades are sufficiently good. Whether the criteria for acceptance into the M.A. programme are met or not will be reviewed by an Admission Committee on an individual basis prior to the enrolment process.

Admission for Graduates outside the EU

International applicants from outside the EU who have obtained their degree abroad must undergo a fee-based special procedure and request a preliminary review documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD)) via uni-assist. Please keep in mind that due to uni-assist's processing time it may take 6-8 weeks for your VPD to be issued. You should therefore request your VPD as early as possible.

  • Deadline for submitting the VPD in the online application in CAMPUSonline: 15 July
  • The request for a preliminary review documentation (VPD) via the online portal at uni-assist is NOT yet an application to the University of Bayreuth. In addition, an application in due form and time via the application portal CAMPUSonline at the University of Bayreuth is always necessary
  • We can only accept your VPD if it has been issued for an application to the University of Bayreuth (evaluation reports and VPDs issued for other universities will not be accepted)
  • You can have your documents reviewed by uni-assist any time of the year

For further information including FAQs, please visitu our uni-assist infopage.

Admission Procedure

Please submit your application package online through the application portal of the university. You can find information on the required documents and the links to the application portals for German, EU, and non-EU citizens here (“How do I apply?”).

We have a rolling admission procedure. However, please allow some time for us to review your application. Depending on your documents, you will either be able to enrol immediately (subject to further conditions if your degree is not fully comparable) or you will be informed about the further selection procedure.

For non-EU students, an official Letter of Admission will be issued as soon as possible and sent to your address of residence. This can be used in order to apply for a visa. Originals of the submitted documents must be presented upon enrolment.

If you have any further questions regarding your application, please do not hesitate to contact us.
